About Us
The Oakura Boardriders club was formed in 1991 after a meeting was advertised at the Butlers Reef Hotel (our local pub). About 50 people attended this meeting and the idea to form a club was well supported.
The initial aims were to- Foster Surfing
- Encourage all Surfers
- Provide a meeting place for its members
- To Protect surfing locations and their environments
Membership is open to anyone involved or wanting to support surfing. Club membership has been fairly static at about 90 and the majority of these are family memberships.
Various Surfing competitions within the club have been held over the years with the annual Club Champs the biggest event which is traditional held over Taranaki Anniversary weekend in March
The Club was awared CLUB OF THE YEAR at the inaugural Surfing awards in 1998 this was after a very busy summer with the Sunsmart Womens, Scholastics, Easter Masters, and the Ocean & Earth Pro Am. These competitions were run or assisted by our club.
