Girls Super Squad!

ree

Term four will see the recommencement of the Girls Super Squad, run by local shredder Thandi Tipene.  The squad had a successful first season focusing on upskilling girls in the surf.  "Super Squad is about bringing together young girls who are already confident in the water, and helping them grow even further. We focus on challenging them in different conditions to build both their skills and their awareness. Each session we hone in on one or two key areas to work on — whether it’s technique, wave selection, or mindset — while also building confidence and resilience in the water."

Thandi, who learnt to surf as a kid paddling out with her Dad, has a solid background in technical and competitive surfing, including taking out wins and titles at the NZ Nationals, NZ Māori Nationals, and Senior NZ Nationals.

She will be using these skills to foster the love of surfing and to equip the girls with the required skills for competitive surfing, and to represent OBC at events  "The aim is to keep the girls in the water throughout the year, so by the time summer rolls around, they’ve got more experience behind them and feel ready — whether it’s for competition or just to keep progressing."
